ABOUT THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD .
The Great Ocean Road follows the southwest coastline of Victoria from Torquay to Warrnambool — around 300km.

With breathtaking panoramic views, it winds its way through many State and National Parks

The dramatic ocean scenery changes markedly between three sections: the Surf Coast

which starts at historic Geelong; the Otway Ranges, where the road leaves the coast at Angelsea; and the Shipwreck Coast, where it re-joins the sea. The highlight of any tour of the Great Ocean Road is the Twelve Apostles, a dramatic group of outcrops isolated from their headlands by the fierce erosion of the sea.
Visiting the Apostles is an unforgettable experience .

Where is the Lake District?.

The Lake District is in the North West of England

with dramatic high fells, peaceful meres and deep valleys formed by Ice Age glaciers.
It contains England’s highest mountain, and deepest lake, and is both a National Park and a World Heritage Site, in recognition of its natural wild beauty and cultural significance, having inspired generations of poets, writers and artists.   What is the Coast to Coast trail?.
The Coast to Coast trail is a largely unmarked route starting in the Lake District by the Irish Sea, heading East to the beautiful Robin Hoods Bay, overlooking the North Sea.

It takes you through three National Parks (The Lake District

Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors), and a range of incredible landscapes in each.
It was created in 1972 by Alfred Wainright, the famous fellwaker, illustrator and walking guide author, incorporating the most beautiful and varied landscapes across the North.
He was a keen proponent of taking time to “stand and stare”, and you won’t be short of opportunities to do so!  How to get to the the Lake District and Coast to Coast?.

All the tours start at railway stations in the Lake District

so the quickest and most efficient way to get there will probably train.

Our Lake District circuits start at Windermere

3.5 hours from London by train, and easy to reach from Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and across the country.

Guests can also drive to the Lake District

though this is a great way to explore the Lake District without a car, or also fly into Manchester.  How hilly is the North?.
The North of England is hillier than many of the other regions of England.
However the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales have a variety of routes which makes the regions great walking country and suitable for those who are moderately fit and active.
There are many hills, fells and moors but the incredible views from the top more than make up from the ascents.
However, you will be able to miss out some of the steeper inclines – or add in some hillier walks for those looking to stretch their legs.
There are routes for everyone and we can tailor your tour to your specific preferences.
Can I do a walking tour as a solo traveller?.
All our trips are open for single travellers.
You will have a great time on our walking tours whether travelling on your own, as a couple, family or group, choosing your own adventure on our self-guided tours.
“As a single female, I would not hesitate to go on another Active England trip as a solo traveller”.
